Kwikset Lock Rekeying: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Rekeying a Kwikset lock in Los Angeles typically costs $25 to $45 per cylinder when we come to you, and the work usually takes 20 to 40 minutes depending on how many locks you have. We stock Kwikset-compatible pins, springs, and SmartKey tooling on our trucks across the city, so same-day service is standard from Koreatown to the Valley. Most people discover they need a rekey when a roommate moves out, a cleaning crew turnover leaves too many floating keys, or an ex still has a working key and you’re not sleeping great about it.
Here’s what’s actually happening inside your lock when we rekey it: we swap the internal pins so your old keys stop turning the cylinder, and a fresh set of keys works instead. Your lock stays in place, no new hardware needed, and the whole thing costs less than replacing a deadbolt. Kevin Yoon and our techs have been doing this across Los Angeles since 2008, and the price we quote on the phone is the price on the invoice.
Which Kwikset Models This Applies To
Kwikset makes two families of locks, and the rekey process looks different depending on which one you own. The Titan line (models like the 980 deadbolt and 810 series knobs) uses traditional pin-and-tumbler cylinders that we rekey with standard replacement pins. The SmartKey 270, 370, and 660 series use Kwikset’s rekeyable core, which means you can theoretically rekey them yourself, but they require a current key to engage the tool and reset the cylinder. If you’ve lost the current key, or the core is worn from repeated SmartKey resets, we rekey it with our truck stock of OEM SmartKey tooling.
Quick compatibility check: if your key has a small oval hole punched near the bow with “Kwikset” stamped on the head, you’re likely holding a SmartKey. If it’s a solid brass or nickel-silver key with no hole, it’s a traditional Titan. Most builders in Los Angeles installed SmartKey locks from 2014 onward, so if your home is newer, you’re probably SmartKey. The aftermarket question matters less for rekeying than for replacement parts, but here’s the reality: aftermarket pins are fine for Titan locks, but for SmartKey cores we only use genuine Kwikset parts because the tolerances on aftermarket SmartKey tools wear down the core after two or three resets. We are an independent locksmith and not affiliated with Kwikset, but we keep their parts on the truck because that’s what holds up.
Signs Your Kwikset Lock Rekeying Is Failing
A rekey doesn’t “fail” like a broken spring, but a cylinder that wasn’t done correctly, or one that’s simply worn out from age, gives you clear warnings. Here’s what we see most often in Los Angeles homes:
- Your key works in one lock but not another on the same keyring. This means different pin stacks were used, or one cylinder was rekeyed and another wasn’t. We correct this by rekeying all locks to a single new key, what we call keyed-alike service.
- You feel a grinding or scratching when inserting the key. Dust and grit from Los Angeles streets gets into the cylinder, but the bigger culprit is usually worn pins that have developed flat spots. A rekey with fresh pins fixes the mechanical feel entirely.
- The key turns but the deadbolt doesn’t throw smoothly. This is often misdiagnosed as a lock problem when the real issue is a misaligned strike plate, but if the cylinder is worn, a rekey plus a strike adjustment gets it buttery again.
- You can jiggle the wrong key partway in and it feels like it’s about to turn. Worn pins lose their shear line precision. That’s a security concern and a sign the cylinder needs new pins or a full rekey immediately.
- A SmartKey tool reset no longer works and the lock stays stuck. SmartKey cores have a built-in lifespan, usually around 25 to 50 rekeys before the internal guides wear down. When we see this, we recommend either a new SmartKey core or switching to a Titan cylinder.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the honest pricing for Kwikset rekeying in Los Angeles in 2026:
- Standard rekey, 1 to 3 cylinders: $25 to $45 per cylinder, includes new keys
- SmartKey core rekey (tool reset or worn core repair): $35 to $55 per cylinder
- Same-key service for multiple locks: flat $75 to $120 for up to 4 locks, we handle the keying schedule
- Service call when combined with rekey: waived with 2 or more cylinders, otherwise $19 to $29 depending on your neighborhood
Every rekey includes a check of the strike plate, latch alignment, and cylinder lubrication. The price we quote on the phone is the full price, written, before a tech is dispatched. No added trip fees on arrival, no “we found more to fix” upcharges. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the rekey isn’t right, we return and make it right at no charge. That’s a written guarantee on every invoice.
DIY or Call Us?
Rekeying a traditional pin-tumbler cylinder is a satisfying weekend project if you have the right pin kit and patience for tiny springs. Kwikset sells a rekey kit for about $15, and there are dozens of YouTube tutorials. But here’s what goes wrong in practice: a dropped pin, a spring that launched across the room, a reassembled cylinder that binds, or a SmartKey tool reset attempted without the original key, which permanently locks out the core until a locksmith resets it with OEM tools. If any of that happens, the lock now needs service, and the cost is higher than if we’d just done it first.
If you’re comfortable tinkering and the lock is a Titan, go for it. If it’s a SmartKey and you’ve lost the current key, don’t. We’ll come out, rekey it, hand you new keys, and you’ll pay exactly what we quoted on the phone. Call us at (409) 405-4485 and Kevin or one of our techs will walk you through what you’ve got.
FAQs
With fresh pins and keys, a typical Titan cylinder stays smooth for 8 to 12 years before the pins start wearing flat. SmartKey cores, if used regularly for DIY resets, hold up for roughly 25 to 50 rekey cycles or 5 to 7 years of daily use. We rekey the core and also adjust the latch so the mechanical system lasts as long as possible. Call us at (409) 405-4485 for a quick assessment over the phone.
If the cylinder is worn but the lock body is fine, rekeying with new pins is the repair and it’s cheaper than replacing the hardware. If the lock is a builder-grade Kwikset from a 2000s-era home in Los Angeles and the finish is peeling plus the cylinder is shot, it may make more sense to install a new Titan deadbolt. We’ll tell you which path is cheaper and safer before any work starts. Free estimates by phone at (409) 405-4485.
Most single-door rekeys are done in 15 to 20 minutes. A whole-house rekey with 3 to 4 locks, keyed alike, runs 45 to 60 minutes including the keying schedule and testing. We give you a live trackable arrival time before we dispatch, so there’s no four-hour window.
