Most days start with a call before coffee and end with someone back in their home, their office, or their car – with a lock that actually works. That’s the job. It’s physical, it’s problem-solving, and it’s different almost every time. You’ll service a Schlage deadbolt in the morning, a Medeco commercial cylinder at noon, and an access-control panel by afternoon. The work requires focus and real skill, and when you do it the way Preston Locksmith & Security does it – written price up front, photos before and after, a guarantee stamped on every repair – you end the day knowing you did something that held up. That matters more than people expect it to.
Who We’re Looking For
- Field Locksmith Technician – The core of the crew. You’re good with your hands, patient with a pick, and comfortable walking customers through what you found and what you fixed.
- Apprentice Technician – You’re new to the trade but serious about learning it. You show up on time, pay attention, and don’t cut corners when no one’s watching.
- Commercial Lock Installer – You understand hollow-metal doors, mortise hardware, and the difference between a job done fast and a job done right. You’ve worked in commercial or industrial environments before.
- Residential Rekey Specialist – Detail-oriented, organized, and efficient. You can work through a multi-unit property or a full house rekey without losing track of a single pin stack.
- Dispatcher / Scheduler – You think two steps ahead, stay calm when three calls come in at once, and communicate clearly under pressure. Customers feel taken care of because of you, before a technician ever arrives.
- Customer Service Representative – You’re the live voice on the phone – no voicemail, no callbacks, no runaround. You give accurate information, set honest expectations, and close the loop.
What We Offer
Real Training and a Clear Path Forward
Whether you come in as an apprentice or an experienced tech, you’ll train on the hardware we actually service – Schlage, Kwikset, Medeco, Yale, Baldwin, Mul-T-Lock, Sargent, and Abloy – across residential and commercial work. There’s a structured path from apprentice to lead technician, and we take it seriously. People who put in the work move up. That’s not a slogan; it’s how we’ve operated since 2008.
Work You Can Stand Behind
Preston Locksmith & Security runs every job to The Relay Standard: written price before we start, live arrival time, before-and-after photos, and a written guarantee on every repair. When you work here, the system backs you up. You’re not chasing awkward conversations about invoices that changed at the door – the price is set before anyone touches a lock. That means you spend your energy on the work, not on managing expectations after the fact.
Local Crew, National Support
Each Preston location is independently owned and operated, which means you’re part of a tight local team – not a call-center rotation or a faceless franchise number. At the same time, you have the backing of a national brand with proven systems, training resources, and the Relay Home Co. family behind you. It’s a combination that most smaller shops and most large chains can’t offer at the same time.
Steady, Consistent Demand
Lockouts happen at midnight. Businesses rekey every time an employee leaves. Homeowners replace hardware after a move. Access-control installs happen on a schedule. Locksmith work doesn’t slow down because the economy does – people always need their locks to work, and they always need someone they can trust to fix them. This is a trade with staying power, and we’re building a team that stays.
No Experience? Read This.
If you’ve worked in construction, automotive, HVAC, or any trade where you used your hands and had to think through a problem without a manual in front of you – you’re already carrying skills that transfer here. Spatial reasoning, mechanical intuition, working cleanly in someone else’s space, and handling a customer when something goes sideways: all of that matters in this work.
What we teach: pin tumbler systems and how locks are keyed, the hardware we service and why it’s different, how to run a job the Preston way from arrival to invoice, and how to read a situation where a customer is stressed and needs a straight answer. The first months are hands-on, alongside a lead technician. You’re not left alone until you’re ready. If you’re reliable, curious, and willing to do the boring foundational stuff without rushing it, we can build the rest.
