Medeco Deadbolt Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Medeco deadbolt installation in Los Angeles typically runs $220 to $410 for a standard single-cylinder unit, including the lock hardware and labor, with same-day or next-day scheduling through Preston Locksmith & Security. That price covers removing your old deadbolt, prepping the door and strike plate, mounting the Medeco, and testing the throw under real-world conditions. Most Los Angeles owners call us because the key turns but the bolt doesn’t fully extend, or the tailpiece snapped clean off after years of daily use. We’re an independent locksmith, not affiliated with Medeco, but we stock and install their deadbolts regularly across the city.
The full price is quoted on the phone before anyone is dispatched to your door. That number is the number on the invoice. No “arrival fee,” no “parts adjustment,” no surprises. Kevin Yoon grew up in Koreatown and has been working Los Angeles locks long enough to know exactly what a Medeco install should cost on the west side, in the Valley, or downtown.
Which Medeco Models This Applies To
Medeco makes deadbolts under three main residential and light-commercial lines: the Maxum, the 11 series, and the older 51 series. Each has different tailpiece lengths, cylinder housing diameters, and strike plate offsets, which means a part from one line will not cleanly swap into another. Maxum deadbolts use a 1-1/4 inch cylinder housing that sits proud of the rose; the 11 series recesses slightly and needs a deeper door prep on older Los Angeles doors with thin slabs.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see often: the Maxum tailpiece is longer than the 11 series by about 3/8 inch. Owners who buy a Maxum cylinder online and try to mount it on an 11 series deadbolt body end up with two to three millimeters of play, which means the interior thumbturn wiggles and eventually strips. If you’re not sure which Medeco you have, remove the interior plate and check for a stamped number on the bolt housing. The number will be either “M,” “11,” or “51” in most cases.
On OEM versus aftermarket: for Medeco specifically, we recommend OEM cylinders and bolts. The Medeco keyway is tighter than Schlage or Kwikset, and aftermarket tailpieces tend to be a hair thinner than spec. In Los Angeles, where summer heat expands metal and coastal moisture invites corrosion, a slightly undersized aftermarket part fails faster than it would in a milder climate. We carry OEM Medeco deadbolt bodies, cylinders, tailpieces, and strike plates on our trucks for all three series.
Signs Your Medeco Deadbolt Installation Is Failing
- Key turns but the bolt doesn’t move. The tailpiece has cracked or the cylinder cam has worn down. Medeco cylinders are built tight, and when the cam wears, the key rotates without engaging. This is the most common failure we replace in Hollywood and Silver Lake, where doors get used heavily all day.
- Thumbturn feels gritty or sticks mid-throw. The bolt carrier channel inside the deadbolt body has accumulated dust and old grease, common in Los Angeles with its dry, dusty air. Over time the channel widens and the bolt will not seat fully into the strike plate.
- Deadbolt drops but the door still wiggles. The strike plate screws have wallowed out the door frame, usually because the original homeowner’s builder used 3/4 inch screws. The plate shifts, so the bolt sits loose even when fully extended.
- Key only works when you pull the knob toward you. The door has sagged on its hinges and the bolt no longer aligns with the plate. Los Angeles neighborhoods with older, non-reinforced frames in Echo Park and Highland Park see this constantly. The fix is reinstalling the strike plate or adjusting the hinges, not drilling the door.
- Interior lever is loose or falls off. The spindle inside the deadbolt has stripped. On Medeco Maxum models, this is a known wear point after roughly seven to ten years of daily use.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
As of current Los Angeles pricing, here’s what a Medeco deadbolt installation costs with Preston Locksmith & Security:
- Standard single-cylinder Medeco deadbolt install: $220 – $340 installed, including OEM cylinder, bolt, strike plate, reinforced screws, and labor
- Double-cylinder Medeco deadbolt (key on both sides): $280 – $410 installed, including both cylinders and hardware
- Cylinder-only replacement on an existing Medeco deadbolt body: $110 – $180 installed, including rekey if needed
- Deadbolt install plus door reinforcement plate: add $45 – $80, depending on frame condition
What drives the range: door thickness, whether the existing prep needs to be enlarged for a Maxum housing, and whether the strike plate area needs frame repair. Older Los Angeles homes with soft pine frames sit at the higher end because we almost always reinforce the plate pocket. Every install includes our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the deadbolt or the installation isn’t right within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. A written guarantee is stamped on every invoice.
DIY or Call Us?
Deadbolt installation does not involve high-tension springs, so it is one of the safer lock projects for a skilled homeowner. What you can safely check yourself: whether the bolt extends fully when the door is open, whether the strike plate is loose, and whether the tailpiece is visibly cracked after removing the interior plate.
Where DIY goes wrong with Medeco specifically: the cylinder housing tolerance. If you’re not sure which series you have and you buy a replacement online, you risk buying a tailpiece that’s 3/8 inch off. You will install it, the thumbturn will feel sloppy, and within a year the cylinder will bind. That’s a $110 to $180 fix we do in about 45 minutes, but it’s cheaper to get the right part the first time. If you want the number: call (409) 405-4485 and we’ll match your deadbolt over the phone and quote the full price before you agree to anything.
FAQs
A Medeco Maxum or 11 series deadbolt installed in Los Angeles typically lasts 12 to 18 years on a residential door, with the tailpiece being the first mechanical part to fail under heavy daily use. Coastal humidity in Santa Monica and Redondo Beach accelerates interior corrosion, while inland heat can dry out the original grease and cause the bolt to bind. We often see Medeco deadbolts from the 51 series still working after 20 years, though parts for that line are getting harder to source. Call (409) 405-4485 if yours is reaching that age and you want to preempt a failure.
Yes, in most cases. If the cylinder still turns smoothly and only the tailpiece has cracked, we can replace that part for $110 to $180 instead of installing a full new deadbolt. If the bolt carrier channel is worn or the interior spindle has stripped, replacement of the full unit is usually more cost-effective than attempting a rebuild. We’ll tell you which one your deadbolt needs after a quick look at the hardware, and the phone quote stays the final price.
A standard single-cylinder Medeco deadbolt installation takes 45 to 75 minutes from start to finish. If we’re also drilling for a double-cylinder setup or reinforcing a damaged strike plate pocket, plan for 90 minutes to two hours. We schedule a trackable arrival window through The Relay Visibility Guarantee, so you’ll know exactly when the technician is in front of your door in Los Angeles, not sitting in traffic somewhere on the 10.
Yes. Our Los Angeles trucks carry OEM Medeco Maxum, 11 series, and 51 series deadbolt bodies, cylinders, tailpieces, and reinforced strike plates, plus compatible Schlage and Kwikset hardware. That means in most cases we can install the same day you call, not after a parts order and a two-week wait. Call (409) 405-4485 and tell us which Medeco model you have; we’ll confirm stock, give you the written price, and send a background-checked technician with your part.
