Medeco Master Key Systems: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Medeco master key systems across Los Angeles, with most commercial master key setups running $850 to $3,200 depending on door count and cylinder type, and we can usually have a tech on site within 90 minutes in central L.A. neighborhoods like Koreatown, Silver Lake, and the Wilshire corridor. You know the system is failing when keys start working in some doors but not others, or when a master key that used to open everything suddenly binds in one specific lock. That’s usually a worn pin or a drifted sidebar, and on Medeco hardware, it’s not something you can fix with a spray can of graphite.
Quick answer on what to expect: we quote a written price before anyone drives to you, we carry Medeco-compatible cylinders and pins on the truck, and we don’t charge a call-out fee if you approve the work on site. If you’re reading this because a key snapped in a Medeco lock or a sub-master stopped turning, call (409) 405-4485 and we’ll tell you the real price over the phone before we dispatch.
Which Medeco Models This Applies To
This page covers Medeco master key systems built on the Original, Biaxial, and M3 cylinder platforms. Those are the three generations you’ll find in Los Angeles commercial buildings, apartment complexes, and a handful of high-end residential properties. The original Medeco uses a standard keyway with angled cuts. Biaxial added offset cuts that make keys look a little asymmetrical under a light. The M3 keeps the Biaxial geometry but adds a slider element in the key itself.
If you’re trying to figure out which one you have, look at the face of the cylinder or the bow of the key. Medeco stamps most cylinders with a small “M” logo, and M3 keys have a small brass slider embedded near the tip. The gotcha most owners hit: you can’t take a cylinder from an Original system and drop it into a Biaxial system and expect the master key to work, because the pin profiles don’t transfer. We run into this constantly when buildings expand and someone ordered the wrong series. For Medeco specifically, we recommend OEM cylinders and pins over aftermarket equivalents. The tolerances are tighter than Schlage or Kwikset, and the sidebar mechanism doesn’t forgive a slightly off-spec pin. We service Schlage and Kwikset hardware too, but on Medeco we don’t gamble with generics.
Signs Your Medeco Master Key Systems Is Failing
- Master key works, sub-key doesn’t (or the reverse). This usually means one or two top pins in a specific cylinder have worn down enough that the shear line moved. In Los Angeles, dry air and fine dust from constant window ventilation accelerate pin wear in older buildings.
- Key feels gritty or catches halfway in. That’s often a worn sidebar spring or a pin that’s mushroomed from years of use. Medeco sidebars are unforgiving; once one spring loses tension, the whole cylinder gets temperamental.
- You have to jiggle the key to get it to turn. On a Medeco, that’s a sign the slider (M3) or the angled cuts are no longer aligning cleanly. Jiggling works for a while, then it doesn’t, and usually at the worst possible time.
- One cylinder won’t accept the master key at all, even though it did last week. A single drifted pin can lock out the master while still accepting the change key. This is the most common reason a property manager calls us after a tenant reports a “broken lock” that isn’t actually broken.
- Keys are starting to bend or show wear marks at the tip. Medeco keys are solid brass, so if you’re seeing deformation, the cylinder is putting abnormal pressure on the key. That’s a cylinder problem, not a key problem, and swapping keys won’t fix it.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Los Angeles Price Range | What It Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Single Medeco cylinder replacement (rekeyed to your master) | $120 – $220 per cylinder | Cylinder, pins, labor, key cut to match your system |
| Full master key system re-pin (5 – 10 doors) | $850 – $1,600 | All cylinders pulled, re-pinned to restore master function, new keys as needed |
| New master key system install (apartment building, 15 – 30 doors) | $2,200 – $3,200 | New cylinders or re-pin of existing Medeco hardware, master + sub-master + tenant keys, written keying schedule |
| Emergency single-door fix (failed cylinder, master key won’t turn) | $160 – $280 | Diagnosis, replacement cylinder or pin repair, one master key and two change keys |
What drives the range is door count, cylinder type (rim cylinders are faster than mortise), and whether your existing hardware is worth re-pinning or needs full replacement. We tell you that before we start, not after. Every Medeco system job from Preston Locksmith & Security includes a written price, a written keying schedule so you know exactly which keys open which doors, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right. That’s a written guarantee stamped on every repair, with a free second visit if something fails.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: confirm the key isn’t visibly bent, make sure you’re using the right key for the right cylinder, and note whether the problem is one door or every door. That diagnostic info helps us quote accurately over the phone.
What you shouldn’t do is open a Medeco cylinder. The sidebar mechanism and the angled pins are not forgiving for someone without the right pin kits and follower tools, and a slipped sidebar can destroy the cylinder body. Medeco also won’t sell pin kits to the public, so even if you got the cylinder open, you couldn’t source the correct pins. If the master key is binding in one lock but working everywhere else, that’s a re-pin job and it takes us about 20 minutes per door with the right parts in hand. Call (409) 405-4485 and we’ll walk through what you’re seeing, then give you the real number before we send anyone.
FAQs
A properly installed Medeco system in Los Angeles typically lasts 15 to 25 years before cylinders need re-pinning, but heavy-use doors in apartment buildings and commercial corridors on the west side often need attention at the 10 to 12 year mark. Dry, dusty air and high key-turn frequency accelerate pin wear faster than the same hardware in a cooler climate. If your system is over a decade old and keys are getting intermittent, a re-pin usually restores it for another decade. Call (409) 405-4485 for an exact quote, and we’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a re-pin or a replacement job.
Yes, in most cases a worn Medeco cylinder can be repaired by replacing the individual pins and springs, which costs less than a full cylinder swap. The exception is when the sidebar or the cylinder body itself is damaged, at which point repair isn’t worth it and we’d recommend replacement. We always tell you which one applies before we start, with the price in writing. Estimates are free, so call us and we’ll give you the real number.
We usually arrive within 90 minutes in central and mid-city Los Angeles, including Koreatown, Silver Lake, Echo Park, and the Wilshire corridor, and a single-door cylinder repair takes about 20 to 30 minutes once we’re on site. For larger buildings needing a full system re-pin, we schedule a dedicated block so we’re not juggling other calls. You get a live trackable arrival time, so you’re not stuck waiting through a four-hour window.
We stock Medeco-compatible cylinders, pins, springs, and sidebar components for Original, Biaxial, and M3 systems on our service vehicles, so most repairs are done same-visit. If you have an unusual cylinder format or a legacy system we need to match, we can usually source OEM parts same-day from our Los Angeles suppliers. Call us with the details and we’ll confirm stock before we dispatch anyone.
