Kwikset Master Key Systems: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Kwikset master key systems in Los Angeles typically run $350 to $900 installed for a complete residential setup, depending on how many cylinders are involved and whether we’re building the key hierarchy from your existing Kwikset hardware or starting fresh. We stock Kwikset-compatible master key components on our trucks and can have your system designed, pinned, and working the same day in most Los Angeles neighborhoods.
Most owners discover they need this when they’re juggling five different keys for their house, garage, rental unit, or office, and someone finally asks, “Why can’t one key open everything while each tenant or employee still gets their own?” That’s exactly what a master key system does. One key opens every lock. Individual keys open only their assigned doors. Kevin Yoon has built enough of these systems across Koreatown, Silver Lake, and the Wilshire corridor to know that the difference between a frustrating setup and a clean one comes down to how the cylinder pins are arranged, and that’s where most generic locksmith jobs fall apart.
Preston Locksmith & Security is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Kwikset, but we work with their hardware daily and stock the pins, cylinders, and key blanks that make these systems function properly.
Which Kwikset Models This Applies To
Master key systems work on nearly every Kwikset cylinder built in the last 30 years, but there’s one gotcha that trips people up: SmartKey cylinders. Kwikset’s SmartKey series uses a sidebar rekey mechanism that does not play nicely with traditional master key pinning. If your locks have the small oval slot next to the keyway, that’s SmartKey. You can still build a master key system, but we replace the SmartKey cylinders with standard Kwikset pin-and-tumbler cylinders, which stay rekeyable and master-keyable for years without the rekey tool.
The good news: Kwikset’s standard pin-and-tumbler cylinders share the same dimensions across the Titan, Signature, and older 660/780 series lines. A master key system we build on a Kwikset deadbolt today will work if you add matching knobs or levers later, as long as we’re using the same keyway. We stock OEM Kwikset pins and quality aftermarket equivalents, and for master keying specifically, we prefer OEM because the pin tolerances are tighter. A difference of a few thousandths of an inch in pin lengths is the gap between a key that turns smoothly and one that jams on a hot August afternoon in Los Angeles when the metal expands.
Quick compatibility note before you buy parts online: Kwikset and Schlage use different keyways and pin specs. A master key system built for Schlage cylinders will not drop into Kwikset hardware. We’ve had Angelenos show up with bags of Schlage pins from a hardware store, ready to go, and we’ve had to gently explain the mismatch. We also service Schlage and Medeco hardware if your property mixes brands.
Signs Your Kwikset Master Key Systems Is Failing
- The master key works, but individual keys are getting sticky. This usually means a couple of master pins have worn down or a driver pin has started catching on the shear line. In coastal areas like Venice or Santa Monica, salt air accelerates this wear on exposed locks.
- Keys only turn if you jiggle them just right. That’s a sign the pin stack heights have drifted, often because the springs inside the cylinder have weakened. Kwikset springs last roughly 7 to 10 years under normal use, and we see this a lot on original hardware from the mid-2010s.
- Someone lost a tenant or employee key and now the whole system feels compromised. Without a master key setup that was planned with this in mind, you’re stuck rekeying every lock. A properly designed system lets us swap just the affected cylinder’s pins and issue a new key for that door without touching the master key hierarchy.
- The master key opens some doors but not others anymore. This points to a cylinder that was repinned incorrectly at some point, or a lock that was swapped out by a handyman who didn’t know a master system was in place. We find this all the time in older Los Angeles apartment buildings where maintenance records were never kept.
- Your keys are fine, but you’re carrying a keychain that looks like a jailer’s ring. That’s not a failing lock, but it is a failing system. When you’re carrying six keys for one property, the master key system you either didn’t have or have outgrown is the part that’s broken. We consolidate those into one master key plus individual tenant or employee keys in about two hours.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, we quote master key system work as a flat project price, not an hourly mystery. A basic residential setup with one master key, one tenant key level, and three to four locks generally runs $350 to $550 installed. Stepping up to a sub-master key tier, which Los Angeles landlords with multiple units or property managers with mixed-use buildings often want, pushes the range to $600 to $900 depending on cylinder count and hardware condition.
What drives the cost: the number of cylinders we’re pinning, whether we’re rekeying existing Kwikset hardware or replacing worn-out cylinders, and how many key levels you need. We’ll also cut and engrave your keys on-site so you’re not waiting days for blanks to come in. Every project includes a written price before we start, our 365-Day Done Right Promise, before-and-after photos, and a written guarantee on the work. If the master system doesn’t operate exactly as specified, we come back and fix it free. No second-visit charge, no argument.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest version. If you just want to understand how your current Kwikset locks are keyed, you can check the keyway shape and pull a cylinder to look at the pin stack without much risk. What you should not do is attempt to pin a master key system yourself using cheap pin kits and trial-and-error. Get a pin length wrong by a couple thousandths of an inch and you’ll have a lock that binds, a key that snaps off in the cylinder, or a door that won’t open from the outside. We’ve fixed enough DIY master key attempts in Los Angeles to know the aftermath: half-disassembled locks, missing pins, and a master key that opens nothing.
The safe route is to call us at (409) 405-4485. We show up with OEM pin kits, a written price, and a live arrival time you can track. You’ll know exactly what it costs before we open a single cylinder. Real price on the phone. Same price at the door. That’s it.
FAQs
A properly pinned Kwikset master key system lasts 7 to 10 years on average before springs weaken or pins wear enough to need repinning. Coastal Los Angeles neighborhoods with salt air, like Playa del Rey or Marina del Rey, tend to shorten that to 5 to 7 years on exterior locks. Call (409) 405-4485 and we’ll assess your current system for free.
Yes, in most cases we repair by repinning the affected cylinders, replacing worn springs, and cutting fresh keys. Full replacement is only needed when the cylinder itself is physically damaged or the hardware is so old that replacement is cheaper than repeated repairs. Call us at (409) 405-4485 for an honest read on which path makes sense.
A standard residential Kwikset master key system with three to four locks takes about two to three hours on-site. If we’re also replacing cylinders or adding new hardware, expect closer to four. We’ll give you a firm time window before we arrive.
Yes. Our trucks carry OEM Kwikset pins, springs, cylinders, and key blanks in the common keyways, so we can usually build your system same-day in Los Angeles without ordering anything. If you have an unusual setup, we’ll tell you at the phone quote stage and schedule accordingly.
