Sargent Rekey Locks in Los Angeles: What to Know First
Rekeying a Sargent lock in Los Angeles typically costs $25 – $45 per cylinder, and most jobs are done in under an hour once we arrive. That price includes the new keys and is confirmed in writing before we touch a single pin. If you’ve lost a key, bought a new place, or had a tenant move out, rekeying is the fastest way to make every old key stop working without buying new hardware.
We’re Preston Locksmith & Security, an independent Sargent service provider in Los Angeles. Kevin Yoon founded this business, and we handle Sargent rekey work from Koreatown to Silver Lake to the Wilshire corridor. Call (409) 405-4485 and you’ll get a real person, a real price, and a live arrival time you can track.
How Sargent Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
Sargent locks are built differently than the Kwikset or Schlage hardware you’ll find at a big-box store. That’s usually a good thing, but it means their problems look different too. Here’s what we see most often on Sargent cylinders across Los Angeles:
- Sargent Keso and Signature Series cylinders get stiff in coastal neighborhoods. The brass pins Sargent uses are tight-tolerance, which is great for pick resistance and terrible for corrosion. In Santa Monica, Marina del Rey, and anywhere the marine layer sits overnight, we see keyways that start refusing to turn. The fix is usually a full teardown, pin replacement, and proper lubricant. Not WD-40, which leaves a film that traps more grime. We use a dry graphite and Teflon mix that won’t attract dust.
- Original Sargent “Removable Core” cylinders lose their control key over time. These are common in older Los Angeles apartment buildings and small offices. The control key is the one that lets you swap the core without disassembling the whole lock. When a property manager loses it, they’re told they need to replace the entire lock. We rekey the core and can cut a new control key if the cylinder is still functional. Most locksmiths won’t bother, but we do it a few times a month.
- Sargent mortise locks from mid-century Los Angeles homes have hardened steel pins that chew through aftermarket rekey kits. If you have a 1950s or 1960s Sargent mortise lock, the cylinder pins are harder than what’s in generic rekey kits. When a previous locksmith used a universal pin kit, the pins wear unevenly and the key starts catching. We use Sargent-compatible OEM or equivalent hardened pins so the rekey holds up like the original.
- The Sargent 10-Line and 6-Line lever locks lose their “changeable core” retention after repeated rekeys. In hospitals, schools, and some Los Angeles office buildings, the same core gets rekeyed every time a staff member leaves. After enough cycles, the retaining mechanism gets loose and the core shifts slightly, causing intermittent failure. We check retention on every core we touch and repair or replace the wear parts before we rekey.
- Sargent “Degree” keyway cylinders confuse locksmiths who don’t know the system. The Degree line uses a restricted keyway, meaning you can’t just walk into any hardware store and get a key cut. When a homeowner loses all their Degree keys, they’re often told the only answer is replacing everything. We can rekey existing Degree cylinders and, if the keyway is restricted, we’ll order new blanks through legitimate channels. It takes a few days, but it’s a fraction of the cost of new hardware.
Our Sargent Rekey Locks Process
Here’s exactly what happens when you call us about a Sargent rekey in Los Angeles:
- 1
You call (409) 405-4485 and we talk through the job. We’ll ask what’s on the door, what keys you have, and what the issue is. You’ll get a written price before anything else happens.
- 2
We identify the exact Sargent product. Before we quote, we confirm the line: 10-Line, Signature, Degree, Keso, or a removable-core mortise. Each one has different pin depths and keyways, and the parts availability changes the price.
- 3
We call out the cylinder. On a standard rekey, we remove the cylinder, label every part, and lay things out so nothing gets lost. On mortise locks or removable cores, we disassemble carefully and inspect for wear before ordering or cutting anything.
- 4
We decide OEM vs. quality aftermarket parts. For wear items like pins, springs, and clips, we use Sargent-compatible parts that meet the same spec. If the lock is under manufacturer warranty, we stick to OEM to keep the warranty intact. We’ll tell you which one applies and why.
- 5
We rekey, test, and photograph the work. Every old key is verified as dead. Every new key is tested in the lock three times: once at each of the most common room temperatures. Then we take before-and-after photos, same as we do on every Preston job.
- 6
You get the written guarantee and a digital invoice. The 365-Day Done Right Promise is stamped on every rekey. If it’s not done right, we make it right. Free second visit if the repair fails, no charge, no argument.
What Sargent Rekey Locks Costs in Los Angeles
Here are the price ranges we quote for Sargent rekey work in Los Angeles. These are written prices, confirmed before we dispatch. The number on the phone is the number on your invoice:
- Standard Sargent cylinder rekey (one lock): $25 – $45 per cylinder, including new keys.
- Sargent mortise cylinder rekey: $40 – $65 per cylinder, depending on whether the lock needs new pins or just a rekey.
- Sargent removable-core or Degree keyway rekey: $55 – $85 per core, including control key or restricted key blanks where required.
- Lost all keys, no working key: Add $15 – $25 per cylinder for picking or drilling, but we’ll tell you upfront if drilling is needed and get your approval first.
What moves the price: how many cylinders, whether we’re dealing with a restricted keyway, and whether any internal parts need replacing. We never charge a call-out surcharge on arrival. Call (409) 405-4485 for your exact written quote. Estimates are free.
Why Los Angeles Homeowners Call Preston Locksmith & Security for Sargent Work
We started Preston Locksmith & Security in 2008, and Kevin Yoon still answers the phone. The business exists because his mother got burned by a bait-and-switch locksmith: quoted one price on the phone, handed a much bigger bill at the door. So we built the whole company around one rule: real price on the phone, same price at the door. That’s it.
Every Sargent rekey we do comes with the Relay Visibility Guarantee: a written price before work begins, a live trackable arrival time, and before-and-after photos so you can see exactly what we did. Our techs are background-checked, uniformed, and trained on Sargent hardware alongside Schlage, Kwikset, Medeco, Yale, Baldwin, Mul-T-Lock, and Abloy. So if you have a Sargent on the front door and a Kwikset on the back, one call covers both.
The 365-Day Done Right Promise is stamped on every rekey. If it’s not done right, we make it right. No fine print, no runaround.
FAQs
No, rekeying a Sargent lock by a qualified locksmith does not void the warranty, as long as the rekey uses Sargent-compatible parts. We use OEM or equivalent pins and springs for every job, and we’ll tell you if your lock is still under warranty before we start. If you’re concerned, call us and we’ll walk through it.
In most cases, we can have a technician at your door within the day, and many rekey jobs are done in under an hour once we arrive. You’ll get a live arrival time you can track, so you’re not sitting around waiting. Call (409) 405-4485 and we’ll give you a real window.
Yes. If you have no working key, we can pick the cylinder or, if absolutely necessary, drill it and replace the core. We’ll quote the total price before we do anything, and you approve it first. Lost-key rekeys typically run $15 – $25 more per cylinder.
Rekey is almost always the better call. If the lock still turns smoothly and the housing is in good shape, rekeying costs $25 – $45 per cylinder versus $150 – $400 for a new Sargent lock plus installation. We’ll tell you honestly if we think replacement makes more sense, but we won’t push new hardware just to pad the invoice.
We do. Sargent Degree and other restricted keyway cylinders can be rekeyed, but depending on the keyway, new blanks may need to be ordered through legitimate channels, which adds a few days. We’ll explain exactly what’s involved and give you a written price before anything is ordered.
Yes. The price we quote on the phone is the price on your invoice. There’s no call-out surcharge, no dispatch fee added on arrival, and no fee for the estimate. If we find something unexpected during the job, we stop and call you with a new price before touching it. That’s the whole point of the Relay Visibility Guarantee. Call (409) 405-4485 for your free estimate.
