Schlage Deadbolt Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

A Schlage deadbolt installation in Los Angeles typically costs $145 – $285 for the full job when a locksmith supplies a new B60/B62 deadbolt, and $85 – $160 when you already have the hardware and just need it professionally swapped. We stock Schlage deadbolts on our trucks and can usually get one installed the same day you call. Most Los Angeles homeowners notice the problem when the thumb turn starts feeling gritty, the key gets harder to turn each week, or the bolt doesn’t fully throw into the strike plate anymore. That’s the deadbolt telling you the internal tailpiece, cylinder, or latch assembly has worn past the point where lubrication will save it.

We’re Preston Locksmith & Security, and we’re an independent locksmith service, not affiliated with Schlage. That independence means we can be honest about which Schlage deadbolts are worth repairing versus replacing, and we don’t have to push one product line over another. Kevin Yoon, our owner, learned this trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, and he’s been fixing Schlage hardware across the city long enough to know which models fail gracefully and which ones leave you standing on a porch at 11 p.m.

Key takeaways:

  • Installed Schlage deadbolt replacement: $145 – $285, parts and labor included
  • Labor-only install of your Schlage deadbolt: $85 – $160
  • Written price before any work starts, same price at the door
  • Real price on the phone. Same price at the door. That’s it.

Which Schlage Models This Applies To

The most common Schlage deadbolts we install in Los Angeles are the B60 (single-cylinder) and B62 (double-cylinder) lines, followed by the newer Schlage Encode smart deadbolt and the smaller-profile B560 series used on older apartment doors. The classic B60 has been the workhorse of Los Angeles rental units and bungalows for two decades, and it’s the model we stock most often on our trucks. The Encode gets a separate set of headaches involving battery contacts and the keypad ribbon cable, which we’ll get to below.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: the Schlage B60 and B560 bolts are not interchangeable with the Schlage Encode bolt even though they look nearly identical from the outside. The Encode uses a slightly different tailpiece length and the motor hub has tighter tolerances. Slapping a standard B60 bolt into an Encode and calling it done will leave you with a deadbolt that works manually but won’t respond to the keypad or app. We’ve seen this happen more times than we can count, usually after a well-meaning handyman tried to save a few bucks.

For OEM versus aftermarket: Schlage’s genuine parts are machined to tighter tolerances and use brass internals that hold up better in coastal air, but a quality aftermarket cylinder from a brand like GMS or Ilco can be perfectly fine for a standard B60. Where we don’t compromise is on the latch assembly and strike plate. That’s the part that takes the physical hit every time the door closes, and a cheap aftermarket latch will start binding within a year on a door that gets daily use.

We also keep parts on hand for Kwikset and Medeco hardware, so if you’ve got a mix of brands on different doors, one visit can sort all of them.

Signs Your Schlage Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

  • The key turns but the bolt barely moves. This is almost always a broken tailpiece, the flat metal bar that connects the cylinder to the bolt mechanism. When it shears, the key spins but the bolt doesn’t engage. It’s a common failure on older B60s, especially in high-use entry doors.
  • The thumb turn is loose or wobbly. Inside the deadbolt body, a small retaining clip holds the thumb turn against the spindle. Once that clip slips or snaps, the thumb turn will still rotate but it won’t reliably throw the bolt. You’ll feel it as play before the mechanism catches.
  • You have to hold the door in place to lock it. The bolt isn’t aligning with the strike plate, which means either the door has settled in the frame or the latch assembly is worn enough to sag. In older Los Angeles homes with wood framing, seasonal moisture shifts in the soil can pull door frames out of square by an eighth of an inch or more.
  • The Encode keypad lights up but the bolt won’t move. On Schlage Encode models, the motor that drives the bolt can burn out while the keypad still works. The batteries aren’t the issue; the actuator assembly is. This is a part-level repair, not a deadbolt replacement, but it requires the exact Schlage motor module.
  • The deadbolt won’t extend unless you slam the door. That means the latch is stiffening. The spring inside has lost tension or the mechanism has accumulated enough dust, paint overspray, or corrosion that it won’t return on its own. Coastal Los Angeles neighborhoods like San Pedro or Playa del Rey see faster corrosion on raw steel internals.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the straight pricing for Schlage deadbolt installation in Los Angeles:

  • Labor-only deadbolt install (your hardware): $85 – $160, depending on whether the door needs mortise work or strike plate adjustment
  • New Schlage B60/B62 deadbolt supplied and installed: $145 – $245
  • New Schlage Encode smart deadbolt supplied and installed: $265 – $425, including app setup and programming
  • Strike plate reinforcement or re-alignment: $35 – $75, sometimes rolled into the install if it’s a quick adjustment

The price range depends mostly on two things: whether your existing door prep matches the new deadbolt’s hole pattern, and whether the strike plate needs re-mortising. Older Los Angeles doors built before the mid-1990s often have a 1-1/2-inch edge bore that’s a tight fit for modern Schlage latches, and we may need a few extra minutes with a router or chisel to get a clean, stress-free fit. You’ll know the full written price before our technician touches a tool. No call-out surcharge added on arrival, no hourly meter running while they work, no surprise line items on the invoice.

Every Schlage deadbolt installation we do is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not done right, we make it right, and the written guarantee is stamped on every repair we complete. If the deadbolt fails within a year, the second visit is free.

DIY or Call Us?

A Schlage deadbolt swap is one of the easier locksmith jobs, but it’s also one of the easiest to get wrong in ways you won’t notice for months. If you’re comfortable with a screwdriver and your door is in good condition, you can absolutely replace a B60 yourself in about 20 minutes. The risk comes with three things: getting the tailpiece orientation wrong (which makes the key turn backward or not at all), stripping the mounting screws in soft wood, and ignoring a misaligned strike plate because “it still locks if I push on it.”

What we’d flag as the real danger zone is anything involving the double-cylinder B62, which has a key on both sides. On a rented duplex or any bedroom-adjacent door, a double-cylinder deadbolt can become a fire egress problem if you can’t find the interior key during an emergency. Los Angeles City building code requires that any double-cylinder deadbolt on an exit door be operable from the inside without a key during occupancy. If you’ve got a B62 on your front door and it’s older than five years, call us before you touch it: (409) 405-4485. We’ll check the alignment, the tailpiece, and the strike plate, and tell you honestly whether it’s a 20-minute job or a full replacement.
