Locked out of the house

What’s Happening

Being locked out of your house almost always comes down to one of three things: a key that stopped working, a lock that stopped turning, or both. In most cases, a locksmith can get you back inside without damaging your door – and usually within the same visit, fix whatever caused the lockout in the first place.

Call (409) 405-4485

A lockout feels urgent because it is. You’re outside, possibly with kids or groceries, and you need this solved now – not after a four-hour window and a voicemail that goes unreturned. The good news is that most residential lockouts are straightforward for a trained technician. The bad news is that a few causes – a broken key stuck in the cylinder, a failed deadbolt mechanism, or a damaged strike plate – can make things worse if you keep forcing the lock before someone looks at it. Figure out which situation you’re actually in before you do anything else.

Why It Happens

Your key stopped working in the lock

Keys wear down over time, and so do the pins inside the cylinder they turn. A key that worked fine six months ago can develop just enough wear – on the cuts, the bow, or the tip – that it no longer lifts the pins cleanly. You’ll notice this as resistance, a half-turn that won’t complete, or a key that slides in but won’t rotate at all. If a copied key is the one failing while the original still works, the copy is likely out of spec – a common issue with cuts made on worn-out duplicating machines.

The deadbolt or latch bolt is stuck

The bolt inside your lock is mechanical, and mechanics fail. A deadbolt can jam because of a broken internal spring, a bent throw, or years of door-frame settling that puts the bolt out of alignment with its strike plate. You’ll usually hear it: the key turns fine but the bolt barely moves, or it moves partway and stops. If your door has swollen after heavy rain or a seasonal humidity shift, the frame and the door may simply be pressing against each other hard enough to bind the bolt even when the cylinder is turning correctly.

A broken key is lodged in the cylinder

Keys break inside locks more often than most people expect, especially older brass keys that have been bent, dropped, or cut thin. If you tried to turn a stiff lock with extra force, the key may have snapped off at or below the keyway entrance. You can usually see a broken key fragment if you shine a phone flashlight directly into the keyway. Do not try to pull it with tweezers or push it further in – either move can damage the cylinder pins and turn a simple extraction into a full cylinder replacement.

The lock cylinder itself has failed

Lock cylinders have a finite lifespan, especially on exterior doors that take daily use, weather exposure, and the occasional attempted forced entry. A cylinder that has failed internally will feel gritty, stiff, or completely frozen regardless of which key you use. On older hardware from brands like Kwikset or Schlage, you may also notice the plug spinning freely without retracting the bolt – a sign the cam or tailpiece inside has broken. This is not a fix-it-yourself situation; the cylinder needs to come out, and that requires the right tools and the right replacement parts for your specific hardware.

What to Do Right Now

  • Stop forcing the key. If the lock is resisting, more pressure makes things worse – you risk snapping the key inside the cylinder or damaging the plug. Turn gently, feel where the resistance is, and stop.
  • Check every entry point you have access to. Back door, garage entry, sliding patio door. One of them may be unlocked. This is worth sixty seconds before you call anyone.
  • Look into the keyway with your phone flashlight. You’re checking for a broken key fragment. If you can see one, leave it exactly where it is and let a technician extract it – a locksmith’s extraction tools are made for this. Improvising with anything else is likely to push the fragment deeper.
  • Do not remove your door from its hinges yourself. It sounds like a workaround but it is not a safe one. Exterior door hinges are heavy, the door can fall unpredictably, and you may damage the frame in a way that makes the door unable to close and lock afterward.
  • Photograph the lock and door frame before anyone arrives. If there’s visible damage – scuff marks around the keyway, a bent strike plate, a cracked door edge – document it. Your technician will want to see the full picture when they arrive.

How We Fix It

When your local Preston Locksmith & Security technician arrives, the first thing they do is assess the actual cause – not assume one. They’ll check the key, the cylinder, the bolt, and the door alignment before touching anything. For a standard lockout with no underlying damage, a trained locksmith picks or bypasses the lock without drilling, gets you inside, and then shows you exactly what failed.

If the cylinder is worn or the key is broken inside it, the fix is either a cylinder replacement or a rekey, depending on what the hardware needs. Both services are performed on the spot for most residential hardware, including Schlage, Kwikset, Yale, and Baldwin. The whole job typically takes one visit. Before any of that work starts, you get a written price – the actual number for your specific job, not a ballpark that grows at the invoice. That’s not a policy we mention in passing; it’s how every job works, every time, backed by the 365-Day Done Right Promise.
